Not just a
Strakonice piper
A unique project - a show by Scottish bagpipers
who play in the Czech Republic - will be presented
by Palác Akropolis in Prague. It's been five
years since this authentic twenty-member group
of bagpipers was assembled as The 1st Bohemian
Highland Pipers, under the leadership of William "Chip" Doehring.
Later, three more musical groups with Scottish
pipers began performing in Bohemia - Czeltic, "Irish
Celts"; Bran, "Rooks" from Brittany;
and Caledonian Club, a dance troupe that incorporates
ensembles with international musicians and dancers,
predominated by Czech musicians. All of them
will perform for the world music lovers of Prague
at the Žižkov club on 22 May.

World in
motion
The tenth annual show of Czech dance creations
and motion theater will feature the most interesting
contemporary Czech choreography of the last
year, presented in the Prague theaters Ponec
and Archa. A procession of well-known soloists
and dance companies will be led by two premiere
performances - "New Choreography" by
Karine Ponties and "Měra" by Petra
Hauerová. As a part of the show at Terzín in
Žižkov, the play "Gabriel Lion 2004",
by Martin Dvořák, will also premiere. At the
Ponec and Archa theaters, other figures known
for their plays will appear: Lenka Dřímalová,
Linda Stránská, Petra Brabcová, Ioana Mona
Popovici, Nir De Volff, Jan Kodet, and Pierre
Nadaud.

The red
stones' allure
The National Museum in Prague is presenting an exhibition
of the world's largest collection of a typically Czech phenomenon
- Czech garnets. The exhibition includes, beautiful dark
red stones of rare size, a collection from the Prague Jubilee
Exposition of 1891, and other works of art, from Baroque
to modern. A special feature of this show will be jewelry
from the estate of Baroness Ulrika von Levetzow, Johan Wolfgang
Goethe's last love, on loan from the Regional Museum in Most.

Fantastic
island paradise
For the first time, Činoherní studio of
Ústí nad Labem is presenting a new Czech play, The Sand,
by Miroslav Bamboušek in Prague. Directed by Tomáš Zielinský,
it follows the protagonists through a half-imagined, half-real
story of people of various nationalities meeting up in the
Canary Islands. Jaruš and Richard encounter a local settler,
Ratko Gorovič, a man who lived through the war in Bosnia.
Despite its tragic climax, this play - winner of the Alfréd
Radok Foundation Award - is filled with witty, terse dialogue.
In contrast with a world of martial violence, Bamboušek depicts
a world in which each character strives to create a world
of love, passion, and release on the exotic islands...a world
that's beautiful but artificial.
