Gypsy hurricane

The autumn part of the “Respect Plus 04” concert cycle will begin at the Palác Akropolis with the world-renowned Balkan brass ensemble Kočani Orchestar. This group, which unleashed the current Roma music mania, has inspired the likes of the Macedonian composer Goran Bregovič and performed in recordings of the Romanian “outlaw” group Taraf de Haidouks, and the director Emir Kusturica presented its members in the Roma film epic House for Hanging. Kočani Orchestar is currently one of the leading Macedonian music groups, garnering well-deserved praise all around the world.

Comedy to cry over

In September a new feature film by Jan Hřebejk and Petr Jarchovský, Head Over Heels, is coming to theaters. It deals with altruism and xenophobia, fear of the unknown, and other feelings that awaken the racism that lies hidden within us all. This dramatic film depicts the existential sensibilities of central Europeans, formerly cut off by the Iron Curtain, whose isolation dissolves and juxtaposes them into an unknown reality. Intertwining tragicomic stories concern the fateful search for love and friendship. But above all, it’s an intimate tale of several ordinary people seeking the way to one another, the way to forgiving and reconciliation, and the way out of chaos.

Poetic performance

The successful theatrical project of the choreographer, dancer, and actress Adéla Stodolová, which in the 2002/2003 season won the Divadelní noviny (Theatrical News) first prize in the alternative category and many other international awards, will be presented by Palác Akropolis this month. In her unique production, Stodolová uses contemporary dance and modern pantomime techniques in order to convey the theme of the work – namely, the fight for individualism that drains us all. The plot involves the story of a woman, from childhood to adulthood, her struggle for freedom and extrication from entangling social conventions. The project’s mission is to free people from the fear of their own individuality and lack of faith in their own inner voices.

Adéla Stodolová: Všechna jediná, Palác Akropolis
September 11 and 27 from 8 pm, tickets CZK 110

Historical testimony

The Leica Gallery exhibition of the works of René Burri, the famed 20th-century Swiss photographer, is the figurative “swan song”. The gallery’s lease in the Prague Castle complex is coming to an end, so this exposition of the works of the eminent artist, one of the best-known photographers of the prestigious Magnum agency, is the last. His photographs include classic portraits of Picasso, Che Guevara, and Giacometti, as well as a selection from fifty years of news photos from around the world. The exhibition focuses on Burri’s interest in architecture and architects, especially Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Luis Barragán. Over 100 photographs are on exhibit.
