Making footprints in Prague In March, as part of his European tour, the legendary jazz composer and saxophonist Wayne Shorter will visit Prague with his star-studded quartet - Brian Blade (drums), John Patitucci (contrabass), and Danilo Perez (piano). All of these musicians have received an impressive gamut of awards, not just for their work with the most resounding names of world jazz, but also for their independent outings. Besides a wonderful solo career, Shorter has also played with Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, and Joe Zawinul, as well as Joni Mitchell and Carlos Santana. During his fifty-year career, Shorter has built a loyal base of jazz fans who enjoy everything from hard bop to modern fusion. On Saturday, 12 March, they will present the festive Shakespeare comedy As You Like It, directed by Peter Mikulík, at the Estate Theater. In this carnival deviation from the quotidian Diana Mórová, Jozef Vajda, Emil Horváth, Stano Dančiak, and Robert Roth play the leading roles. The next day the Estate Theater stage will feature the bizarre, provocative whodunnit The Pillowman, by the contemporary English dramatist Martin McDonagh. "Old-timers" in motion

The play Lola & Mr. Talk, which had its Prague premiere at the end of February, won the Sazka and Theatrical News Award for dance for 2004. This involves the first collaboration between leading Czech choreographer and dancer Jan Kodet and the Swedish dancer Charlotta Öfverholm, who was nominated for the Thalia prize for this role. The play tells a bizarre tale full of humor and fantasy about an aging couple, Lola and Albert, who try to dispel the ennui of their long relationship by creating the abstract figure Monsieur le Manque (Petr Opavský dances the part of the Mr. Missing), who fulfills their hidden wishes and desires.

Transparent forms

Another exhibition in the "Masters of European Glass" cycle presents a selection of the life works of František Vízner (1936). The artist studied at the Industrial School of Glasswork in Železný Brod and the College of Applied Arts in Prague. He first worked as a designer for Sklo Union in Teplice, then plied his trade in the glassworks of the Center for Artistic Crafts in Škrdlovice. Now he focuses on studio cut glass in Žďár nad Sázavou. He creates harmonic, geometrical bowls and vases filled with inner tension. His work is characterized by its continuity and timelessness.
