A cello explosion
Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso
are a trio of brilliant, classically educated
cellists that compete - through their abandon
and massive sound - with bands like Metallica,
Slayer, Faith No More, and Sepultura. Apocalyptica
has reached the awareness of fans with their
excellent interpretations of Metallica songs,
but in their recent albums they have relied exclusively
on their own music, written by Eicca Toppinen.
During their two-day stay in Prague they will
also perform some numbers from their new album,
Support Angelzoom.

Dynamic fashion
and design
Štěpánka Stein (1976) and Salim Issa (1973)
are collaborating photographers who focus on
lifestyle documentaries and fashion photography,
as well as on the works of contemporary Czech
designers and architects. Therefore, their
photographic project CzechMania 2004/2005 was
conceived in two parts - "Messages" and "Czechmania
Design". The first part asserts the trends
of the young generation, which accepts fashion
and design while reshaping it according to
their own creative methods. The second part
is a probe into the functioning of the original,
refined creations of young Czech designers
in the real life of Prague streets.

Dance project retrospective
In April the 11th annual festival of Czech dance creation and
movement theater, Czech Dance Platform, will be hosted by several
Prague theaters. The festival's goal is to introduce the 21 most
interesting works of dancers and choreographers - both Czech and
foreign residents. On Friday, 22 April the festival opens with
a preview of "Vibrations", by Hungarian choreographer
Puttó. On Saturday afternoon Divadlo Archa will present the world
premiere performance of "Duší dítěte" (Through a Child's
Soul), by the pair SKUTR and dancer/choreographer Adéla Stodolová.
For the first time, the festival will visit the Švandovo theater,
with a performance of Viliam Dočolomanský's "Selavi - emigrantova
píseň" (Selavi - An Emigré's Song).

They left their
homes behind, but haven't found new ones
"Following a Dream" is a joint performance
of Divadlo Archa and residents of the Červený Újezd refugee camp,
in which director Jana Svobodová was inspired by the Hans Christian
Andersen story, The Snow Queen. In refugee camps, people come together
from all sorts of fates; people of different cultures with varying
religious beliefs and educations. All too often, the surrounding
communities don't greet them with open arms. Some people are afraid,
some are indifferent, and only a few care about the refugees' fates.
A sense of impotence and long, passive waiting for miracles are
common characteristics of these ad hoc homes. This project is a
part of the theater's dramaturgical direction, abandoning the form
of traditional theatrical performances.
