Retro rock in film

The Lucerna cinema in Prague will show rock
films from the 1960s almost all summer. Eighteen
cult foreign, mostly American, films will be
screened (Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy, Woodstock,
Zabriskie Point, The Graduate, etc.), some of
which have never before been shown here. The
series includes two Czech movies - Lemonade Joe
or Horse Opera and Oldies Picking Hops - shot
during the relaxed '60s. The series is a part
of the Rock Music and Alternative Visuals of
the '60s project, which will be held in Prague
and other locations.

Shakespeare at the castle
The summer Shakespeare festival, which has been organized at Prague
Castle since 1998, brings something new every year. This year features
three premieres. The first, a multi-faced evening by translator
Martin Hilský called Shakespeare's Jesters, was the gala kick-off
in June. The main feature is the play Twelfth Night, directed by
Viktor Polesný, while the Slovak part of the festival was opened
by the newly staged Merchant of Venice, starring Bolek Polívka.
The program will also feature Romeo and Juliet, which premiered
last year, and Hamlet, starring Jiří Langmajer, which appears for
the third year due to great interest. As always, the plays will
also be performed at Špilberk in Brno and in Bratislava.

Eight decades of creation
Czech painter Karel Chaba will soon celebrate his 80th birthday,
and an exhibition featuring a cross-section of his works will be
held in commemoration. Chaba devoted a great part of his life to
Prague, which inspired and charmed him. He came here shortly after
the WW II and saw it with the eyes of a village boy, and it has
stayed with him thus. He wandered through the alleys, made discoveries,
befriended Bohumil Hrabal... and painted intensely. His first show
was in 1960, and then made his mark outside of exhibition halls
- creating for instance, the sets at the National Theater for Dvořák's
Jacobin. Today he lives on the Lesser Bank, and his paintings are
known abroad as well, appearing in exhibitions in France, Germany,
Italy, Egypt, and elsewhere.
