Hypnotic rock

The French ambient-electronica duo M83 will perform in Prague as a part of the MOVE festival. Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau debuted in 2001 with their album M83, but Fromageau left the band in 2003 following the release of their second, breakthrough album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. This album earned them fans not only at home, but in the US and the UK as well, putting the French label Gooom on the indie music map. The third album, Before the Dawn Heals Us, was released in March 2005. After the Prague performance, M83 is planning a tour through Japan. The Belgian group Soldout will open the concert.

Women on the verge

This performance is made up of two captivating dramatic portraits of entirely different women who found themselves in some sort of life crisis. The first part is about New Yorker Elisabeth Stevenson (Barbora Kodetová) who, after a series of frightening, threatening phone calls, realizes that her beloved husband is trying to kill her. The second part depicts seventeen ordinary days in the life of Magda Klimková (Anna Šišková), an unsuccessful actress from Warsaw who is willing to do anything to get her seven-year-old son Jašek to finally crawl out from under the table, where he has been hiding for many weeks in response to his parents’ painful divorce.

Images of coarse youth

Around the end of the 1950s Prague native Jan Bartůšek (1935-1993) was starting to become one of the noteworthy photographers in the Mladý svět magazine circle. He and Leoš Nebor, Pavel Dias, and Miroslav Huck preferred working with photographs of the everyday lives of young people. The gradual easing of the ideological grip on society was also apparent in the students’ May festival in 1965, when the American beatnik poet Alan Ginsberg visited Prague and was voted King of the May Festival. This chamber exhibition is reminiscent of other – coarser – documentary works by Bartůšek.

Violin christening

In April renowned Czech vocalist, composer, and violinist Iva Bittová, together with the Bang On a Can All Stars band, presented their new project in Carnegie Hall, New York. The musical work called Elida was released on CD in the US in June. The Czech “christening” of the album will take place at Divadlo Archa, where each evening their joint performance will be opened by a different program. The event was promoted by the Carnegie Hall management, who wanted to present this musician in a new, original project following Bittová’s success last year as Elvira in the opera Don Giovanni.
