Return of a classic

After years, a classic trilogy about human responsibility in the face of the ageless laws of fate is returning to the stage of the National Theater. With the background of the fates of the members of the Atreus royal family, it poses questions about the sense of human suffering and the nature of divine justice. Derived from legends of the tragic curse on the royal family, the Oresteia was first staged during the Great Dionysian festivities in 458 BC. For the National Theater production there is a new, remarkable translation by the theologian Matyáš Havrda and the poet Petr Borkovec. The play is directed by Ivan Rajmont.

Irish rock lands in Akropolis

Only the best things have been said about the famous Irish rock band The Frames in recent years. Their last year’s album For the Birds, produced under their own independent label, was well-received in Ireland not only by critics, but also by audiences, and Hot Press magazine (the Irish version of Rolling Stone) awarded it the best CD of 2001. Guitarist and singer Glen Hansard leads this peculiar band after 12 years of its existence. Although his great potential as an author and performer can be compared with such personalities as Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens or Bob Dylan, he is clearly inspired by wilder Irish rock bands, like The Pixies. For their “rock mass” in Palace Akropolis the band will feature the following line-up: Glen Hansard (guitar, vocals), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (violin), Dave Hingerty (percussion), and Joe Doyle (bass).

Fancy steps await fans of dance

“Uber Kreuz” Susanne Linke

This year Prague will whirl with dance for the 14th time during the “Tanec Praha” (Prague Dance) festival. Both a tradition and an inseparable part of life in the capital city, the festival has also caught on in Brno and Hradec Králové. Over the years, outstanding modern dance celebrities have performed in the Czech Republic. There have been classic dance performances, including dance theater, dance in dialogue with other art (or with audiences) and other categories less easily classified. This year will be no exception, as the motto for the festival is “Dance Beyond Borders.”

Veletržní palác comes alive with color

Until 1 September, fine arts lovers can admire the works of the New New Painters group of artists at the Prague National Gallery. This eleven-member group of artists represents a trend of contemporary American and Canadian art. The artists follow the history of abstract art in the US as it developed since the mid-1940s, while also developing a bold, visually perceived language that draws on American visual culture of the last quarter of the 20th century. They return to art a greater measure of personal expression, and for emphasis they use acrylic paints and gels, mixed with less traditional media such as shards of glass and mirror, plexiglass, metals, plastics, utensils, etc.

New New Painters, Veletržní palác, until September 1 2002, open daily except Mon, 10:00-18:00, tickets CZK 30-60

Tickets for these events may be purchased at any of the Ticketpro outlets, online through www.ticketpro.cz., or by phoning the EchoLine call center at 14051.
