Comedy filled with sly foxes

The author of the play Volpone, Ben Jonson, is considered the second greatest author of the English Renaissance, just behind Shakespeare. His comedy, which is directed by Daniel Hrbek at the Švandovo divadlo, takes place at a time when being a good attorney was beginning to become more important than being a priest. The rich Venetian nobleman Volpone and his clever servant Mosca think up a brilliant trick for easily multiplying their money. Volpone pretends that he is dying, and because he has no heirs to whom to leave his wealth, a lawyer (Voltore), a merchant (Corvino), and an old man (Corbaccio), very soon start circling his bed like vultures, trying to win his favor. Morality and respect vanish before the vision of a generous will. But who has out-thought whom? Who will finally get the windfall?

Shocking physical bravura

In cooperation with the British council, Divadlo Archa, which found temporary asylum at the Ponec theater in Žižkov after the floods, has prepared a visiting performance by the British integrated dance ensemble CandoCo. Its members include both healthy and physically challenged dancers. Since its establishment in 1991, the ensemble has been able to build a reputation for high quality. It performs first-rate contemporary dance theater, placing emphasis on execution and audience involvement. After a successful visit in 2001, CandoCo is returning to the Czech Republic with three new choreographic works: “Phasing”, “Sour Milk”, and “Shadow”. The creators, Jamie Watton, Javier De Frutos, and Fin Walker, are leading representatives of the current choreographic generation that has found its home in Great Britain.

A menagerie of tones at Akropolis
In the second half of February, the legendary French duo Bumcello will come to Prague for the EuroConnections 2003 project. Their music is a blend of various genres, from traditional acoustic music to the wildest electronic sets possible. The musicians themselves slightly ironically call their style “ultra-intelligent, innocent dub-dada-oriental-spaghetti-contemporary hiphop”. The basis of the group is Vincent Segal (electric and acoustic cello, bass, guitar, kass-kass, ritchak, Fender piano, vocals) and Cyril Atef (drums, percussion, steel drum, santur, vocals), although they invite excellent kindred musicians to their concerts and recording sessions. Their latest album, Nodu For Lovem, which was released in April 2002, received critical acclaim.
EuroConnections 2003: Bumcello (Fr.), Palác Akropolis, February 21 at 19:30, tickets 200-250 Kč
Faces of cubism
From the middle of February to the middle of March, visitors to the Malá dvorana at Veletržní palác can witness the painting process of large-format copies of two Picasso paintings. Pablo Picasso painted “Cat Catching Bird” and “Cat Eating Bird” in April 1939 as a reaction to Hitler’s armies’ assault on the Czechoslovak Republic in March of the same year. Artist Josef Ryzec decided to bring back this historical event through his own work, right on the location of the installation. The works created in communication with the exhibition space will remain where they originated until March 30, and will then be placed permanently in an internet café.
Josef Ryzec – pocta Pablu Picassovi, Veletržní palác – Malá dvorana, from February 10 to March 30, open daily except Monday 10:00-18:00, tickets 30-60 Kč
Tickets for these events may be purchased at any of the Ticketpro outlets, online through www.ticketpro.cz., or by phoning the EchoLine call center at 14051.
