March 2003

You’re outta here!

Divadlo Archa will present the internationally famous play Top Dogs, which was written by Swiss playwright Urs Widmer, and will be directed by Jiří Pokorný. This unusual drama transports us into the world of top managers. Although we find the characters at a critical breaking point – the moment when they lose their jobs – we can get a picture of the real world in which the main characters fulfill their ambitions. The play speaks of unemployed people who had held great power before being fired – former “top dogs”. Until recently they had thought that they were impregnable, but now they all find themselves suddenly disillusioned.

Brotherhood of brass

A “delicious” concert by Frank London and his Klezmer Brass All Stars, with guest Boban Marković (USA, Yugoslavia), will be performed as part of the United Colours of Akropolis 2003 series. London is one of the major names in global klezmer music and the leader of The Klezmatics and the Frank London Klezmer Brass All Stars. Boban Marković is the uncrowned king of trumpet among Romanian brass players, and his music can be heard in films by Emir Kusturica. When these two musicians get together they produce a literal brotherhood of brass – thus the name of the album that was the fruit of these shining world music stars. This will be their first performance together in the Czech Republic.

Cult of the Red Cat

Prague’s Gallery of Critics is currently showing an exhibition of drawings by the painter Michal Singer. His pictures – striking, hot, and urgent – are always inspired by personal experiences. But his life seems less “real” as it is transformed by imagination and fascination, so his works look more like apparitions. The initial stimuli are often inconspicuous things that we nearly don’t notice because of their ordinariness. The crux of Singer’s latest exhibition is his as yet unpublished color drawings. By using the pointilistic technique the artist unrolls his own iconography, which can also be seen in his expansive, illusory, colorful paintings from 1996 to 2002.

Michal Singer: Chrám Červené kočky, Galerie kritiků, Palác Adria, until March 19, open daily except Monday 10:00-18:00, ticktets 20-40 Kč

A tale of love, sin and hope

For centuries the Pied Piper has been wandering from town to town, and his face has many different appearances. The film’s plot, inspired by V. Dyk’s story of the same name, portrays the fate of a young couple – Agnes, who is pregnant, and her partner Kristián – who are traveling from church to church requesting a wedding ceremony, but facing rejection everywhere. A piper in a long coat comes along, gifted with a magical ability to induce catharsis in others, but who has not yet experienced love. His meeting with Agnes is like a bolt from the blue. Kristián calls his beloved’s name in vain, and the devil sets traps for them, also in vain. The bond of love has a price. This film, by F. A. Brabec, is entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the most quickly shot film in the world.

Krysař, premiere March 6 in multiplex cinemas throughout the Czech Republic
