Eternal love story

Minimalist music is a popular modern trend, and even the National Theater opera is joining in. On 28 August, the opera company will present the Czech premiere of a unique work by a major American composer, Philip Glass – the opera La Belle et la Be^te (The Beauty and the Beast). The music was originally composed for a Jean Cocteau film of the same name, and the opera premiered in 1994 in Gibelline. At the National Theater in Prague it will be directed and produced by the distinguished brothers Petr and Matěj Forman and conducted by Petr Kofron. Thanks to their original approach and concept, preparations for the performance are the most complex in the history of opera at the National Theater. Tamara Gura will play the Beauty, with Jiří Kubík playing the Beast.

Two generations of romantics

For this summer, the Prague National Gallery has prepared an extensive exhibition in Kinsky Palace devoted to the Mánes family, presenting one of the best known and most significant chapters in the history of 19th century Czech art. It is represented by five persons from two generations that emerged during the period of romanticism. The works of brothers Antonín and Václav originated under the influence of the first wave of romantic ideas and sensibilities. Antonín’s children, Amálie, Josef, and Quido, began painting at the time when Czech society was most strongly influenced by the tenets of romanticism. The exhibition presents all the members of the Mánes family, with the lion’s share devoted to Josef, the most famous of the children.

Lovers of various musical styles will be delighted, as the show will include world and dance music, ethnic music, as well as celebrities of the Czech music scene. The chock-full program of internationally culled performers features Goran Bregović & The Wedding and Funeral Band, Geoffrey Oryema, Kosheen, Support Lesbiens, J.A.R., The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa, Sheva, Te Vaka, Oi-Va-Voi, Koraiö Röma, Tumbao, Suí Vesan, Feng-Jün Song & Horská karavana, and more.

Road to the pleistocene

The unique Dinopark amusement park, which is intended for the general public and is the only one of its type in the Czech Republic, opened in the middle of June at the Pilsen Zoological and Botanical Garden. On an area covering three hectares, it realistically depicts scenes from the lives of Mesozoic animals that roamed this planet more than 65 million years ago. Visitors will see thirteen true-to-life models, including: Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, Velociraptor, Diplodocus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and many other of popular prehistoric theropods. The part of the park that abuts the zoo is a special playground for children and an educational center.
