Iva Pekárková, writer

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I always wanted to be a traveler, explorer, adventurer. And also a man, of course. I was convinced then that women just were not “allowed” to do things like that.

Who are your favorite painters?
The very old ones, like those who painted on the walls of their caves, and the modern ones. Their styles are sometimes curiously similar. And, well, quite a few painters in between.

If you could be literary hero, who would you chose?
I certainly wouldn’t want to be a heroine of one of my own novels. Unfortunately, people often think I am.

What truth about yourself would you like people to know?
That I’m an 18-year old, ninety-pound blonde. Please, don’t forget to remind the artist who will render me for this portrait.

What is never missing from your fridge?
Hot sauce, mango chutney and an assortment of jars with “Best before the end of the Stone Age” written on them.

What was the last thing that was stolen from you?
Man, I don’t know. My heart, maybe?

What is your favorite activity during the day?
Nothing. The thing I like to do most of all (writing, I mean) is best done by night.

What is the best place to make love?
Well, it’s up to the participants, of course. But I personally prefer the classical orifice, with, perhaps, a few adventurous journeys elsewhere.

Where will you never return to?
To a 9-to-5 job. Not that I actually ever had any.

Your favorite insult?
Could I please save it for the very end of this interview?

Your favorite means of transport?
The beam (or whatever they call it in Star Trek).

How would you like to die?
Quickly but not too soon.

Your favorite saying?
Superstition brings bad luck.

If you still drove a taxi, to whom would you most like to give a lift?
Václav Havel, I think. But he doesn’t take taxis anymore, I hear.

How do you get up in the morning?
I tried to avoid getting up in the morning.

If you had to sacrifice one of your senses (sight, hearing, taste, etc.) which one would it be?
Give me a break! Didn’t I already die for you in this interview?

Which of your dreams has come true?
Believe it or not, most of my dreams fulfill themselves – sooner or later.

If you were organizing a dinner to which you could invite five people from any place and any era, whom would you invite?
That’s a good one, actually. I’d like to invite people from all kinds of places and times – but what would I serve them? And would they have things to talk about among themselves – and with me? It’s better not to try, I think, if only because I don’t want to burst five bubbles.

Do you think it is better to say everything or not to know everything?
I think that one doesn’t exclude the other. At least,
I know a lot of people who tell much more than they actually know. Anyway, what an esoteric question.

Do you like happy endings?
Yes. Especially this one.
