“Stepping” out for fun

A book signing for The Souls of Your Feet by Acia Gray, translated by Zdeněk Pilecký, will begin on the International Day of Step 2003 in Prague’s Ponec theater, May 24 at 7 pm. At 8 pm, a step-dancing show will be performed at the Žižkov theater. This celebration of step-dance in the Czech Republic has been organized by the ZIG ZAG tap & swing dance studio since 1999. This year the program will include step-dancers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with Acia Gray from the US as the guest of honor. Yvona Jelénková will act as MC for the evening.

Horrific Hollywood

The comedy Like Complete Lunatics was written by contempo-rary American playwright William Mastrosimone in 1998. The story takes place within the upper echelon of the film industry. Fans of a famous and popular Hollywood star and film producer pay an unwelcome visit to their house. Despite its comedic character, the play depicts a serious theme – the confusion of boundaries between fiction and reality and the aggressiveness of the younger generation. The writer attributes the roots of this to the film industry and the modern media.

Opera from modern sources

Following the success of The Fall of the House of Usher, a cult opera by Philip Glass, Prague will now get to see the Czech premiere of another minimalist opera, this time written by John Adams. Klinghoffer’s Death reflects the biggest social problem of the times: international terrorism. The story is based on actual events – the kidnapping of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in October, 1985, and the death of one of the passengers, Leon Klinhoffer, who was confined to a wheelchair. It is the second Adams opera, composed in collaboration with librettist Alice Goodman and director Peter Sellars. This staging is the first in a cycle of minimalist operas and will be supplemented by Beauty and the Beast by Philip Glass and Facing Goya by Michael Nyman.

J. Adams: Smrt Klinghoffera, Národní divadlo, premiere May 22 at 19:00, tickets 900 Kč, 30 Kč (for standing).

German masters on paper

This exhibition of drawings by German artists from the 15th and 16th centuries is unique in many ways. Most of the works have never been exhibited, and the scope extends from the beginning of the Renaissance to the height of the “trans-alpine” Renaissance and the beginnings of Mannerism. Several late-medieval lists from the region of what is today Austria will be displayed, as well as drawings influenced by the Dutch from the Upper Rhineland. Albrecht Dürer’s, influence is mainly represented through the works of his pupils (such as Hans Holbein Sr.) and other contemporary artists. The second half of the 16th century is represented by leading graphic artists such as Virgil Solis and Jost Amman.

Německá kresba 15.-16. století, Palác Kinských, until end of May, open Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00, tickets 60 Kč, reduced 30 Kč, family 100 Kč
