Hanging existential debate

In a dramatization of a novel by one of Austria’s foremost writers and dramatists, Thomas Bernhard, Karel and Marian Roden have their first opportunity to act together. The play centers on two old men who endlessly squabble at the Art History Museum in Vienna in front of the Tintoretto painting “Men with White Beards”. Are their quarrels the result of the painting, or of principal existential questions? What is behind the paintings, and the custom of hanging them there? Why exactly did the ancients paint portraits and then hang them on walls?

T. Bernhard: Staří mistři / Old Masters, Divadlo Komedie, premiere June 4, also on June 6, 8, 13 at 19:30, tickets CZK 70-180

Do you wanna hear a secret?

The chances of seeing a Beatles reunion concert ended with the demise of John Lennon and, more recently, George Harrison. Of the original Fab Four only two are still making music – while Ringo Starr performs only rarely, Paul McCartney has been pursuing a solo career since the Beatles’ breakup. In 2003 McCartney (currently 62) began a tour of European cities, and now he’s finally coming to Prague with his marvellous band of musicians. Paul’s concerts are famous for their energy, to say nothing of the music: a selection of the best of his thirty years of performing solo, as well as immortal hits by the Beatles.

Dancers from a distant land

As part of the Tanec Praha 2004 festival, Tanz Ensemble Cathy Sharp presents a multi-style evening that includes two dance works, “Just For Fun” and “Happy Land Far Away” by Cathy Sharp, and “Out of White” by the Dutch choreographer Regina van Berkel. The Swiss ensemble was established in 1991 in Basel. It has developed into a first-rate company that enchants audiences with fantasy, playfulness, innovation and, above all, dance skills based on a perfectly executed technique somewhere between ballet and modern dance.

Forgotten panoramas

Photography buffs can peruse a unique exhibition of works by local artist Ivan Lutterer, who would be fifty now. Sixty-eight panoramic shots taken with Josef Sudek’s legendary Kodak depict Prague’s islands, playgrounds, swimming pools, dumps, and courtyards, as well as romantic backwaters. Lutterer’s name is mainly connected with projects “Czech Person” and “Glance” at Czech World 1898-1998. He created thematically comprehensive collections to which he constantly made additions, and he never wanted to make unfinished works public. He also played a role in preserving the historical heritage of Langhans Studio. The show is accompanied by a coffee-table book with 127 selected panoramic shots and texts by Anna Fárová and Václav Sokol.
