Romeo, Juliet, and Hamlet
This year’s 8th annual Summer Shakespeare Celebration will be dominated by the premiere of the famed love drama Romeo and Juliet. The play, with its noteworthy cast, is directed by the fine Slovak actor and director Martin Huba, who directed the successful King Lear last year, starring Jan Tříska.
Another great performance will be Hamlet, starring Jiří Langmajer, who was nominated for the Alfréd Radok Award and the Thálie Award for his energetic performances. The US-based Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre company will also present its concept of Hamlet – in English and with large puppets. Another visiting ensemble will be Divadlo F. X. Šalda, from Liberec, presenting All’s Well that Ends Well, directed by Jan Kačer. This outdoor theatrical festival will run until mid-September on authentic sets at castles in Prague, Brno, and Bratislava.

Changing times
An exhibition of leading Prague photographers is the ninth consecutive continuation of a series of free photographic creations with a Lesser Bank theme. Since the “Velvet Revolution” in 1989 the Lesser Bank has changed perhaps more than any other Prague historical quarter, but not always for the better. Eight artists – including Štěpán Grygar, Zdeněk Merta and Stanislav Tůma – tried to at least partially document the atmosphere of these locations from past and present, and to create a sort of visual confrontation.
