The times were to blame

This year’s 100th anniversary of the birth of Emil František Burian is commemorated by Divadlo Archa in a play by Jiří Pokorný, which attempts to portray the story of one of the greatest – and at the same time, most inconsistent – theatrical artists of the 20th century. Burian was a director, composer, dramatist, theorist, hit singer, and a left-wing politician. He was imprisoned in a concentration camp, he was a communist, and he was loved and hated, but above all he was a very charismatic personality. The music-filled performance follows the fateful changes in Burian’s life, unfolding in a story of passion that becomes fanaticism, and vision that becomes blindness.

Three faces outside the window

Three worlds hidden behind the doors of an apartment leading out to a crowded street…this is brief description of a performance by dancer and choreographer Adéla Stodolová, who follows up on her earlier performance, “All Unique”, for which she received many awards locally and abroad (Poland, Venezuela). Stodolová invited two musicians, Ridina Ahmedová and Petra Ernyeiová, to cooperate on stage. Musician Jan P. Muchow also took part in creating the soundtrack.

Madrigal on stage

The “Lamenti” project was created by the Italian-Swiss writer Francesco Micieli and the opera director Jiří Heřman. The original theme for this project was the Monteverdi fragment “Lamento d’Arianna”. The project deals with the relationship between words and music in a novel way – the resulting form is chamber music-poetry, which brings an innovative view of the interpretation of sound and vocals in space. Composer Michal Nejtek was invited to set the poems to music, and the resulting composition is a cycle for one male and four female voices.

Urban faces

Artist and photographer David Holas (1973) has prepared his third sales exhibition of black-and-white retro photography, called “Města – The Cities.” The exhibition presents six years of the artist’s travels to cities around the world – New York, Paris, Sidney, San Francisco, Lisbon, etc. The photographs were taken in the style of the ’30s to the ’60s and processed through the techniques of old masters. The collection premiered in 2002 in Sydney, at Blender Gallery-Paddington, under the name “Scapes”.
