The present, impromptu

The Vizita Theater, created by Jaroslav Dušek and Martin Zbrožek, is a unique Czech theatrical ensemble that since 1981 has been continually probing the possibilities of improvisation and spontaneous creativity. At its beginning it engaged in “narrative” theater and variations on previously set themes that were changed at every performance in accord with current situations on stage and in the audience. Since 1986 Vizita has focused on “pure” improvization, with the actors having no idea of any agenda before going on stage. The same will apply for this special pre-Christmas performance.

Amateurs on stage

The dance performance “Persons and Casting” is an abstract documentary on human behavior with three fifty-year-old men and one young female dancer. The choreography of Kristýna Lhotáková and Ladislav Soukup is based on observed details of ordinary people’s behavior. The fifty-year-old men in the project are played by Vojtěch Gajda, a pump technician and miner by trade, Jaroslav Synek, a long-time culture and education worker, and Eduard Čubr, a sales representative. All three are novices in intensive dance theater.

Beauty and the beats

Eight years ago Iva Frühlingová left this country for Paris to try to make her dream come true. She not only became a successful model for photographers, she also signed a contract with the music company Virgin France and subsequently released her debut album. At 21 years of age she was one of the first Czechs to be awarded such a contract. Her subtly tuned pop style contains elements of pop, rock, jazz, and Latin music. In France she performed with her more famous colleagues Benjamin Biolay and Raphael, who will also perform in Prague, along with guest artists Richard Krajčo and Jan P. Muchow.

Jubilee commemoration

The ongoing exhibition in the St. Jan Nepomucký Chapel presents classic black-and-white photographs by twenty leading Czech documentary photographers who, fifteen years ago, recorded the so-called Velvet Revolution. On display are photos from 17 November 1989, as well as other stormy dates that brought thousands into the streets. Several pictures are from October 1989, when state authorities broke up and jailed demonstrators. This exhibition commemorates the spirit of a tumultuous period in Czech history.

Listopad 1989 / November ’89, Pražský dům fotografie, Klášter františkánů
Until January 2, 2005, open daily 10:00-19:00, entrance fee: CZK 10, 20, 30
