Swan song

After nearly three years the National Theater Ballet is presenting a reworking of one of the most beautiful romantic ballets, Giselle, which brightens many stages around the world. The traditionally conceived version of the ballet is based on the original libretto and music, enriched by the artistic scenography of the contemporary British artist Bruce Frenche. The choreography and direction are the work of the English choreographer and educator Christopher Hampson. He started out as a choreographer at the Royal Ballet School, and thanks to his creative talent he has also worked with the famed English National Ballet. In 1999 he retired as a dancer and now spends all his time on choreographing ballets. Under his direction the soloist Tereza Podařilová will play the lead role, Giselle.

Step by step

Palác Blaník in Prague will present a new form of dance performance – a rhythmic tap-dancing show called WINGS. Accompanied by recorded and live music performed by Cartonnage, the main actors (as well as the project’s creators), Jan Bursa, Pavel Strouhal, and Václav Muška will perform the so-called “show of complete unrestraint”; a free, stylized form of tap-dance. Eight-year-old Dominik Budlovský, the country’s champion tap-dancer, will join them in duets to show off his artistic skills. Each performance will feature a special guest from the ranks of pop music performers, such as Jiří Korn, Dara Rolins, and Martin Pošta. This euphoric show, which cannot be confined to any genre, was prepared in cooperation with Carli Rebecca Jefferson of the world-renowned rhythm band STOMP.

A drama of love and betrayalA dramatic musical play, “Gypsies Go To Heaven” is a musical tale of the passionate love of a beautiful Gypsy girl, Rada, and the “king of thieves”, Lujko Zobaro. At the same time, it’s a devastating parable about the eternal human longing, searching, and love that can destroy itself. This play, in which first-rate artists take part, is filled with evocative Roma melodies, dancing, and movement. Many talented young artists will perform in the play, including Vanda Konečná as the Gypsy girl Rada and Daniel Bambas as Lujko Zobaro. In supporting roles we will see Stanislav Zindulka, Johanna Tesařová, Hana Gregorová, and others.

Prints of Art Nouveau

František Drtikol (1883-1961) is one of the best-known and most widely-recognized Czech artists. He founded modern Czech photography at the beginning of the 20th century, and between WWI and WWII he successfully published and exhibited his works around the world. This exhibition contains over 140 photographs by Drtikol from the time when he was one of the world’s leading artists working in the spirit of Art Deco, as well as from a collection of works connected with his later spiritual focus. The exhibition will be supplemented by several three-dimension figurative elements and drawings that the artist used when taking pictures. The exhibit is courtesy of the Museum of Applied Arts, the owner of the largest collection of Drtikol’s works.
